RETIRED banker David Gemmell who has just been installed as the 86th president of Fife¹s oldest Rotary Club is organising his third major charity dinner for Dunfermline Rotary Club on 9th November, having already rung up over £36,000 for Rotary causes.
A Rotarian since 1997, Mr Gemmell said, "We are hoping to continue ensuring
that local charities at home and abroad benefit, as well as supporting Rotary¹s
own Foundation charity."
Dunfermline-born Mr Gemmell, who has served the club as foundation, community,
entertainment and special events convener, took early retirement four years
ago from the Bank of Scotland, with whom he had served for 29 years. He joined
the bank on graduating with an honours degree in economics from Edinburgh
University and served latterly as an area manager and then director of business
banking in Fife, based in Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy. His career took him to
senior roles in both a number of Edinburgh branches and Livingston the early
part of his career having been spent at London Chief Office.
Mr Gemmell, who was educated at Canmore and Commercial Primary and Dunfermline
High Schools, is a director of Dunfermline Heritage Trust, which runs the
award-winning Abbot House heritage centre, and of the business consultancy,
Eden River Associates Ltd
A life-long Pars' fan, he served on the testimonial committees for both Andy
Tod and Stewart Petrie and organised two successful golf days. He is a member
of Dunfermline and Canmore Golf Clubs, having relinquished the presidency
of the latter club in December 2006.
Mr Gemmell is a member of Gillespie Church, of which he is treasurer of the
project fund, and a founder member of the Dunfermline Gilbert & Sullivan
Society.
Mr Gemmell gives talks to secondary schools through the Financial Education
Partnership, set up by the Scottish Education Department and the Chartered
Institute of Bankers in Scotland.
His wife, Claire, was formerly headteacher at Dalgety Bay Primary School,
but is now a professional development coach for aspiring headteachers.
Mr Gemmell has two sons, Alan and Duncan, a step-son Liam and step-daughter Cara and two grand-daughters, Laura and Emily.
